A gas oven igniter doesn't fail suddenly. It weakens. It works by drawing enough current to open the gas safety valve, and as it ages it draws less. The oven takes longer and longer to light, because gas is flowing while the igniter struggles up to the current needed.
Eventually it never gets there — and the classic symptom is an igniter that glows brightly while the oven never lights at all.
A door seal hardens and stops gripping. Heat escapes continuously, so the elements run longer to hold temperature. Cooking becomes uneven, preheats get longer, the kitchen gets hotter, and the elements and thermostat work harder every single use.
A temperature sensor drifts and the oven runs hot. Food overcooks, so people compensate by lowering the dial — which masks the fault while it continues drifting. Components spend their life at higher temperatures than intended, and the eventual repair is the same inexpensive sensor plus whatever the heat cost.
Spills carbonise into burner ports and igniter areas. On gas, that produces an uneven flame and eventually incomplete combustion — which is a tier one item. On electric, baked-on debris damages elements.

Everyone out of the building. Don't operate switches, don't use a phone indoors, and don't light anything. Turn the gas off at the meter or appliance valve only if you can do so safely on your way out, then call your gas utility and 911 from outside. We attend once the site is confirmed safe.
Everyone out, then emergency services. Don't go back in to open windows — and don't dismiss an alarm as faulty.
Stop using that burner or appliance. It's a combustion problem, and it's frequently a simple fix — but not something to keep cooking on while you decide.
Keep the door shut and switch it off. Opening it feeds the fire.
It isn't designed for it, and it's a genuine carbon monoxide risk.
A freestanding range can tip forward if weight is applied to an open door — a child climbing on it, or a heavy roasting tray on the door edge. The bracket that prevents this is supplied with every freestanding range and is frequently never fitted.

A pyrolytic self-clean cycle runs far hotter than any cooking function. It works — and it puts the entire appliance under thermal stress that older components frequently don't survive.
Thermal fuses blow, door lock mechanisms seize, control boards fail, and elements give out. A very common pattern is an oven that cleaned beautifully and then wouldn't turn on — or wouldn't unlock.
If you're going to use it:
On an ageing appliance, consider cleaning it manually instead. The cycle is frequently the last thing an old oven does.
Let it cool completely first, because most lock mechanisms won't release while hot. Still locked when fully cold is a fault.
Cap alignment, then ports, then the igniter or spark module. Tier two or three depending on whether it lights at all.
