A water filter restricts progressively as it ages. The first symptom is small, hollow cubes, because the mould isn't filling properly.
But the same filter serves your drinking water and your dispenser — so an overdue filter is a water quality issue, not just an ice one.
Left long enough, restricted flow also contributes to fill tube freezing, which loops back into the drip chain.
Ice that sits for weeks clumps and absorbs freezer odours. It tastes stale, so people stop using it — which means it sits longer, absorbs more, and clumps harder.
If the freezer has drifted a few degrees warm, the ice maker's harvest cycle won't trigger reliably — so ice production drops or stops while food stays perfectly frozen. People book an ice maker repair; the actual fault is a refrigerator that's working harder than it should be, and heading somewhere expensive.
This is worth separating out, because it's the most common reason an ice maker repair isn't an ice maker repair.
A freezer running a few degrees warm keeps food perfectly frozen but won't reliably trigger that cycle — so production slows or stops with nothing wrong with the ice maker at all.
The display shows what the appliance has been asked to do, or what it believes — which on a unit with a drifting sensor is exactly the thing you're trying to verify. Most freezers should sit around 0°F.
The causes are the ordinary refrigerator ones: dirty condenser coils, a failed door seal, ice from a defrost fault, an overfilled compartment, or high ambient temperature.
Fix the freezer and the ice maker frequently starts working again with no repair at all — and you'll have caught a refrigerator fault that was heading somewhere much more expensive than ice.
The wire bail arm inside the freezer should be down; an optical sensor shouldn't be blocked. If a bag of frozen food is leaning on either, the ice maker is simply switched off.

The small piercing valves sometimes used to tap a pipe for a fridge line — they clog, weep, and restrict flow. If yours is fed by one, it's worth replacing with a proper valve — and a weeping saddle valve is a tier one item in its own right.

The inlet valve, the fill tube, the shut-off arm, the thermostat, or the filter. All sensibly priced, and many complete in a single visit.
On many refrigerators the ice maker is a self-contained assembly that comes out and goes back in as a unit. Frequently the practical repair, and far cheaper than the alternative.
Only relevant if the underlying problem is the fridge itself — a sealed system fault, a failed compressor, or a freezer that can't hold temperature on an ageing appliance. In that case the ice maker was a symptom, not the problem.
Standalone and under-counter ice makers are their own appliance: pumps, valves, and thermostats are worth repairing; sealed system failures on an older unit frequently aren't.
You'll always get which level you're at — and if the real issue is the freezer rather than the ice maker, you'll hear that before anything is replaced.

That's tier one. Something is dripping — usually an inlet valve or a fill tube — and inside a freezer that water freezes and grows. It jams the mechanism, and eventually meltwater escapes the cabinet.
Not enough water is arriving. Usually an overdue filter, low supply pressure, a partially frozen fill tube, or a failing inlet valve. Change the filter first — and remember that filter also serves your drinking water.
Roughly every six months on most models. A restricted filter causes small cubes, slow production, and poor taste — three complaints, one part.
That's normal for a domestic ice maker. Cloudiness comes from dissolved air and minerals freezing quickly. Commercial machines make clear ice because they freeze slowly in layers.
Dump the bin, change the filter, and use the ice more. Ice absorbs freezer odours, and ice that sits for weeks always tastes stale — which makes people use it less, which makes it worse.
Either the ice is sitting too long, a door seal is letting humid air in, or an inlet valve is dripping and welding them together — which is the drip chain, and worth checking.
Measure the freezer with a thermometer rather than trusting the display. A freezer a few degrees warm keeps food perfectly frozen but won't reliably trigger the harvest cycle — and that's a refrigerator fault, not an ice maker one.
That's frequently the cause of small cubes. Many RO systems deliver water at too low a pressure for an ice maker to fill properly.
Very common after a filter change — usually the filter isn't seated and locked properly. Remove it and refit it firmly. If it persists, that's tier one, because it's water outside the appliance.
