Spills carbonise into burner ports and around igniters. The flame ring lights unevenly, then burns yellow at the affected points, and soot begins to appear on pans. That's tier one arriving via a cleaning job that never happened.
An igniter weakens rather than failing suddenly. It works by drawing enough current to open the gas safety valve, and as it ages it takes longer to get there — so the oven lights more and more slowly. Eventually it never does.
Carbon monoxide alarms have a stated end-of-life. They don't last indefinitely, and an expired alarm gives no protection while looking exactly like a working one. Some get removed during decorating and never go back. Some beep at low battery and get taken down.
That's the detection layer degrading — so a tier one fault that would have been caught immediately becomes undetected.
Combustion drifts slowly, and nothing visible changes. An appliance that has never had a combustion check has never had anyone confirm it's burning correctly — only that it lights.
A detector is the only reliable way to know it's present.
The symptoms are easy to mistake for something else: headache, nausea, dizziness, tiredness, breathlessness, confusion, and flu-like feelings without a temperature.
Symptoms that ease when you leave the building and return when you go back in. If more than one person — or a pet — is affected at the same time, treat that as a serious warning.
What to do: everyone out, call emergency services from outside, and seek medical advice. Don't go back in.
And the detection layer itself:
If the burner cap was crooked, ports were blocked, moisture was stopping the spark, or the breaker had tripped — that's a call you didn't need to make.
If you smell gas, or a CO alarm has sounded.
Yellow flame, soot, burnt smells, scorching, a compromised vent, or anyone getting symptoms that ease outside the building.
A gas oven that's slow to light, an uneven flame ring, a dryer taking longer, baked-on spills, or an appliance that's never had a combustion check.
A slow-clicking igniter that still lights promptly, an oven lamp, or a cosmetic knob.
If the burner cap was crooked, ports were blocked, moisture was stopping the spark, or the breaker had tripped.
A burner that won't light: cap alignment, ports, then the igniter or spark module. All burners clicking with none lighting: usually the spark module or the supply valve.
A burner that goes out when you release the knob: that's the flame supervision device working — a thermocouple or flame sensor that holds the valve open only while it detects a flame. Routine repair, and never to be bypassed.
A yellow or sooty flame: tier one.The oven won't light but the cooktop does — they're separate burners with separate igniters. An igniter that glows but never lights the oven is the classic weak-igniter symptom.
The oven running cool could be the igniter, valve, thermostat, or sensor — or a door seal, which is worth ruling out first with the paper test.
Soot inside the cavity is tier one.It tumbles but doesn't heat: the supply valve, then the igniter, flame sensor, valve coils, or a thermal fuse.
A blown thermal fuse is a symptom, not the fault — restricted airflow makes a dryer overheat and the fuse does its job. Replacing it without clearing the vent means it blows again, and on a gas dryer restricted venting is a combustion issue as well as a performance one.
A gas dryer must always vent outside.Gas work is regulated, and the requirements vary by jurisdiction — but the principle doesn't. Anyone working on the gas side of an appliance should hold the appropriate qualification, and you're entitled to ask.
An electrical repair done badly stops working. A gas repair done badly can keep working while producing something nobody can smell.
Which is why a job should end with combustion verified, not just with the burner lighting. Lighting proves the ignition system works. It proves nothing about how completely the gas is burning.
Clean burner caps and ports, dry an igniter area, clear a dryer vent, and check a breaker.

Photograph the rating plate, and tell us whether the appliance is natural gas or LPG. Appliances are configured for one or the other, with different injectors and settings — and one running on the wrong gas is a combustion problem by definition.
