Three shorter chains worth knowing:
Moisture sensors get coated with fabric softener film and start reading clothes as dry when they aren't. Cycles stop early, so people run two — doubling runtime and heat exposure. The fix is wiping two metal strips with a little rubbing alcohol.
A squeal from worn drum rollers or an idler pulley develops into a flat spot, then extra load on the belt, then a snapped belt and a drum that doesn't turn at all. All ordinary parts, and cheaper before the belt goes.
A blocked heat exchanger or secondary filter produces exactly the same lengthening cycles — and on a heat pump dryer it makes the compressor work harder, which is the one expensive component on that type.
Unplug it and stop using it. Not one more load.
Don't open the door. Introducing air to a smouldering lint fire makes it worse. Switch it off at the socket if it's safe to do so, and call the fire service if there's any doubt at all.
Everyone out of the building. Don't operate switches, don't use a phone indoors, and call your gas utility and 911 from outside. We attend once the site is confirmed safe.
That's an overheating condition. The airflow path and the thermostats both need checking before the machine is used again.
Don't run a dryer you're unsure about while nobody's home.
Clean it every load. But a filter that looks perfectly clean can be sealed by an invisible film from dryer sheets and fabric softener.
Run water through the mesh. If it passes straight through, it's fine. If it pools or beads, it's coated — wash it with warm soapy water and a soft brush, and dry it before refitting.
If any of those solves it, that's a call you didn't need to make — and on this appliance, it may be more than a call you've avoided.
Burning smells, smoke, scorched clothes, a hot casing, sparking, or breaker trips. Gas smells go to the utility and 911 first.
Longer drying times, a blown thermal fuse, weak exterior airflow, a developing squeal, or cycles stopping early. These are the cheap fixes — and on a dryer they're the safety ones.
A drum light, a single failed setting, or a noise that's been constant for years.

There's a condenser unit or heat exchanger that has to stay clean, and frequently a secondary filter below or behind the main one.
Almost always a blocked heat exchanger or secondary filter rather than a fault. Many owners have never been shown where it is.
Which drains away or collects in a reservoir. A full reservoir stops the machine, and a blocked drain does the same.
So a heat pump dryer that seems slow next to an old vented machine may be performing exactly as intended.
And this is the one dryer type with an expensive component — the sealed refrigerant circuit. Which is exactly why the tier two maintenance above is worth doing.
On a conventional vented or condenser dryer, repair almost always wins.
Belts, rollers, idlers, thermostats, thermal fuses, door switches, elements, igniters, and moisture sensors are all ordinary parts, and a dryer is mechanically simpler than most appliances. Typical service life sits somewhere in the region of ten to thirteen years, and a well-maintained machine frequently exceeds it.
Motors and control boards — and on a very old machine they can shift the answer. On a heat pump dryer, the sealed system is the exception — and there, age decides.
If the fault is airflow, replacement fixes nothing. A brand new dryer venting into a blocked duct dries exactly as badly as the old one — and arrives with the same fire risk. Sort the vent first, then decide whether you still need a new machine.

And describe the symptom precisely. "It heats but takes two cycles" is airflow. "It tumbles with no heat at all" is the heating circuit. Different diagnostics, different parts.
